What inspired you to become a makeup artist and beauty consultant?

I’ve always had a passion for makeup. It became natural to tap into my passion. I have a solid support system. They inspire and motivate me every single day to go after my dreams.

How would you describe your makeup artistry style?

I am more of a natural soft glam artist. I love to bring out my clients natural beauty with my own twist.

What kind of services do you offer?

I offer bridal, photoshoots, prom, corporate, and any special occasion makeup.

Do you have a favorite makeup product or brand?

My favorite brand is Juvia's Place! I love their products because they cater to all skin types.

If you had a night out on the town, then do you prefer a full glam makeup look or a natural makeup look?

A night on the town I would bedazzle it a bit. Natural with a pop of color on the lips or eyes.

Are you more or a blush or bronzer makeup person?

Bronzer.

Are there any challenges you've had to overcome as a makeup artist?

Just making peace with the fact that there are a lot of people doing what I’m doing, but nobody can do ME!

Can you leave our readers with one skincare tip that can help them apply makeup more smoothly?

Yes, make sure you cleanse, moisturize, tone, and prime before you apply your makeup.

What are some words of advice you can give to future makeup artists who want to build their portfolio and find clients?

Practice, always be open to new techniques, and new ways of doing things.

Outside of your business, what are some other hobbies that you enjoy?

I like doing things with my friends and family. I love hosting parties at my home, having game nights, and going on family vacations with my babies.

What inspired you to start your beauty company?

As a self-taught makeup artist since I was 10 years old, makeup has always been my passion. As I grew older, my passion for beauty grew. When I started working as a retail makeup artist, I got to meet more people and help find solutions to their beauty concerns. I started feeling more fulfilled compared to how I used to feel when I applied makeup on myself. Since then, I realized that my passion for beauty was no longer applying makeup to make myself feel good, but to share good makeup tips that could also help others feel good and confident about themselves.

What does the name "Moshika Beauty" represent?

If you look closely at our logo you will see an O shaped in a dog face. Moshika is a combination of my name “Kate” and my pomeranian “Moshi.” Moshi was my first dog that I decided to bring on my journey when I started college and started living on my own. Moshi played a crucial role in helping me learn to be responsible and independent in many ways since I had to take care of myself, and also her (she was like my baby!). With her getting older during the time I was creating my brand, I wanted her legacy to continue to stay with me. We both have a similar personality of being fun, unique, and like to glam up. Unfortunately, Moshi passed away a few months after I started building my brand due to an auto-immunue disease that required expensive treatment. Although we were able to get her all the treatment she needed, it made me realize how her life was based on the available funds for the treatment. As a result, one of my goals with Moshika Beauty is to be able to give back to pet organizations and help provide vet funding for future pets in need.

How would you define clean beauty?

Besides crafting a thoughtful, non-toxic ingredient list, clean beauty is also a feeling and emotion you get when applying the beauty product. When I apply clean beauty products, I feel good from the inside out, like the body is giving me a good response to the products. I feel glowing from within compared to applying makeup with toxic ingredients that only make you look good on the surface.

Why are clean beauty products important to you?

I started to be more thoughtful about the chemicals that I put on my skin after I had a major hormonal acne breakout during my first year of med school. I was so stressed that my skin started breaking out, and it destroyed my self-confidence in many ways. Even the best and most expensive makeup still cannot hide the acne situation that I was going through at the time. After I was able to recover my skin and get it back to normal, I realized the importance of having good skin, and being thoughtful about things that we put on our skin, because healthy skin is the foundation to a flawless and effortless makeup look.

Do you have a favorite product from your brand?

This is a hard question because it’s like asking to pick your favorite child.  Thankfully, all of the products from my brand work together. I actually use them together to complement each other all the time! I love using our vegan lash liner  to put on our comfy hand-made silk lashes!

You have such creative packaging! What does the creative process look like when you are creating new packaging?

Thank you! This means a lot because I actually hand draw out all our packaging designs before turning them into a digital graphic design so there’s a lot of creative thoughtful process behind the scenes for all our packaging. Our goal is to create packaging that is fun, unique, and also glamorous. Also, we want to promote sustainability by limiting unnecessary plastic and create multi-functional packaging where our customers can reuse the package for other things. For example, our customers love turning our full magic lash kit into a travel makeup brush case!

Tell us more about your Full of Magic Kit?

Our Full of Magic Lash Kit was the second product we launched and she is our best seller. Just like how the name suggested, this kit is full of magic because it has everything you need to instantly lengthen and volumize your lashes like a makeup professional. The best part is that you get two different types of lashes in this kit that allow you to go from a casual everyday look to a night out glam look without having to redo your entire makeup! This kit is a great starter kit for those who just started to learn how to wear false eyelashes. It has everything you will ever need, and our lashes are also reusable! Definitely worth your beauty investment!

Is Moshika Beauty sold in any retail stores?

We are mainly available online. We are now starting to expand in our Florida local retail and medspa stores. You can find us in Tampa at Skin Radiance Med Spa, Downtown St. Petersburg at Flash Dentspa, and the Clearwater/ Largo area at Success by Design Med Spa. Also, we have done a special retail pop-up in the past with Flying Solo NYC.

Are there any challenges you've had to overcome as a CEO?

I feel like I am learning new things every day. Every day as a CEO I get to face new issues and challenges that I had to overcome. As Moshika Beauty is growing, we are also growing our teams and brand partners, so whatever challenges they are facing will also become my new challenges as well.  Despite all of the challenges, our wins as a team are the most important and fulfilling experiences that help us overcome all of our challenges.

What are some words of advice you can give to future entrepreneurs who want to start a beauty company?

First, I am so grateful to meet so many kind, talented, inspiring, and successful entrepreneurs on my beauty journey. I have learned so much. I am always inspired by many of my fellow entrepreneurs. We all are different in our own unique way. What all entrepreneurs have in common are passion and belief in their businesses, and how impactful their businesses are to the world. My advice to future entrepreneurs who want to start a beauty company is to start working in the lowest position of your dream beauty company, or start interning at a start up beauty company. You will get the whole 360 aspect of the industry. Maybe then, you may have changed your mind, and don’t think it’s what you imagine it to be at all because we all have our image of what we see versus reality. If you have seen the reality, and the true effort it needs, but you still want to do it, then go for it. If you are truly passionate for it, then you will be able to face all of the challenges that will be coming your way.

Outside of your business, what are some other hobbies that you enjoy?

I enjoy working and growing my brand so much that I believe I am constantly thinking about my next project as a hobby now! Jokes aside, I travel almost every month where I get to explore art museums, nature, and local/cultural food of the city/country I am visiting. I enjoy learning about other local businesses and how I can help support them. I spend my extra time connecting with non-profit pet shelters. Also, I volunteer with the Children Dream Fund organization to help make dreams come true for seriously ill children living on the West Coast of Florida.
