What inspired you to start your beauty, skin, and hair care company?

I started Yasmin’s Beauty originally to solve issues for myself. Due to my coconut and tree nut allergy, finding personal care products that wouldn’t cause me an allergic reaction was always a struggle. I earned my Bachelors of Science in Chemistry, which made my available product selection even smaller because I learned how to read printed labels and INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) labels properly leading to the revelation that while reacting to coconuts and tree nuts. Also, I was reacting to many of their chemical derivatives. After sitting in an online forum for days looking for product recommendations, a light bulb finally went off. I realized that not only did I have the education and training to create my own personal care products, but there was a definite market need for what I had to offer. I was willing to put in the work to do what had to be done. I filed my LLC a week later and began formulating and brainstorming product lines.

What kind of products do you sell?

Here at Yasmin’s Beauty we offer an array of products across 4 collections:

Our skin care line includes cleansers, toner, serums, moisturizers, oils, and lip balm.

Our body care line offers our bread butter bar, liquid soaps, our newly added body oil, balms, body butters, body creams, and body scrubs.

Our men’s care line currently offers beard wash, beard balm, beard oil, and hair pomade. We will be adding four more products by the fall.

Our hair care line is currently being reconstructed. At the moment, we only offer a fabulous Mango Hair Pomade and our Rosemary Growth Serum & Aerie Hair Creme - both will be live by the time this is published. By winter, we will be adding three shampoos, two conditioners, and a cream/gel styler. 

Why do you think butters and oils are important for healthy hair maintenance?

Butters and oils are important for healthy hair maintenance because of our hair overall composition.  While the majority of the hair strand is composed of fibrous protein like keratin, the hair also contains a small lipid layer that needs to be maintained for overall health. In addition, not all oils and butter behave the same way. Some oils and butters are small enough, molecularly, to absorb into the hair strand helping to maintain that lipid layer and provide nourishment to the strand. Other oils and butters are larger, so they adsorb onto the strand aiding to protect the strand from outside pollutants by forming a barrier and smoothing down the hair cuticle. Oils and butters are also amazing emollients.  They can provide great “slip” to the hair increasing manageability by untangling the hair, and promoting less overall breakage.

Is there an active ingredient in any of your products that you think works miracles on the hair, skin, or body?

My favorite active ingredients that I’m currently working into many products are cucumber and rosemary. These two, whether separate or together, are nature’s miracle gifts to the hair, skin, and body. Currently, I use four forms: Cucumber Seed Oil, Cucumber Hydrosol, Rosemary Oil, and Rosemary Hydrosol.

Cucumber has amazing moisture and hydration properties. They have great anti inflammatory and antioxidative properties, tightens pores, promotes skin brightness (plumps the skin and provides glow), and can help combat hyperpigmentation.

Rosemary is the gift that keeps on giving. Hair benefits alone by putting Rosemary at the top - Clinically, Rosemary Oil is just as effective as synthetics like Minoxidil. Rosemary is better because it won’t cause your hair to shed if use is discontinued. The skin and body benefits are endless as well. Rosemary can be used antiseptically due to its high antioxidative and antimicrobial properties, so it’s effective against acne. Rosemary Hydrosol has amazing toning benefits for all skin types, tightening pores, reducing inflammation, minimizing puffiness, and providing a nice hydration boost. Rosemary has also been used historically to treat skin conditions like dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis.

Do you have a favorite product in your company?

While I love and push all my products, I am quite fond of my Cucumber Hydrating Serum. It hydrates and plumps my skin to perfection. I always feel like I’m just glowing after application.

Can you leave our readers with a daily hair care tip?

My #1 daily hair care tip is “stay hydrated and mind your business”. One of the best things you can do for your hair on a daily basis is to make sure you are hydrated because haircare starts from within, and hydration is an optimal key to every function in the body. Minding your business wonders for your hair because the lower your cortisol (stress hormone) levels are, the less likely you’ll prematurely send your hair into the telogen (shedding) phase, and your hair does NOT need to be manipulated every single day. Stay hydrated and mind your business.  May your hair flourish.

Are there any challenges you've had to overcome as an entrepreneur?

The biggest challenges I’ve faced since becoming an entrepreneur have been finding balance and showing myself grace. It’s very easy to get lost in the sauce when you start your own business, especially if you don’t have the financial backing to focus solely on building your business. I started my business in September 2020. I was working a full-time and part-time job. We were still in a pandemic. Balance didn’t even exist in my vocabulary. Now, my business is my only job. I have to frequently remind myself to take a step back and breathe sometimes. While business is going well, I always subconsciously doubt myself because I thought business would be much further, almost 3 years in, so allowing myself grace has been essential. My business and I have come a long way despite many personal and professional adversities. We’re still here and we’re thriving!

What are some words of advice you can give to future entrepreneurs who want to start a health and beauty company?

The best advice I can give future entrepreneurs is to simply believe in yourself, and believe in your brand, even when no one else around you does. Take those leaps of faith.

Outside of your business, what are some other hobbies that you enjoy?

To give myself a break from the day to day hassle that comes with being my own boss. I enjoy stepping out of reality and into a good book. I love reading. It’s always been my little haven. Currently, I’m re-reading Fake It Till You Bake It by Jamie Wesley.

What inspired you to start your journey as a licensed nail tech?

Since my childhood, I have harbored a profound fascination with nail care. Fond memories arise of my aunt adorning my nails with vibrant colors. As I grew older, I eagerly undertook the task myself, frequently experimenting with various nail polishes, and adorning press-on nails. During my teenage years, I became a regular client at nail salons. It wasn't until my early twenties that the thought of pursuing a career in the beauty industry materialized.

A pivotal moment occurred when I encountered an independent nail technician operating in a modest studio. This encounter ignited the realization that I could transform my enduring interest into a viable profession. Reflecting upon my unwavering passion for receiving nail treatments, I arrived at the conviction that becoming a nail technician would be an immensely fulfilling endeavor. Consequently, in 2011, I took the decisive step of enrolling in a prestigious cosmetology school, thus paving the way for the successful trajectory that followed.

What does your company name "Get Klawed Nails" represent?

The inception of Get Klawed Nails can be attributed to my personal affinity for the stiletto nail shape, a preference shared by a significant number of my esteemed clientele, whom we affectionately refer to as our "claws". Moreover, my profound adoration for feline companionship further influenced the brand's identity. As a proud owner of five beloved cats, I sought to encapsulate both my favored nail style and my deep affection for these magnificent creatures.  Hence, the inclusion of a black cat in my logo serves as a symbolic representation of this heartfelt connection.

What kind of nail services do you provide?

My specialization revolves around delivering exceptional services of hard gel enhancements, overlays, and structured gel manicures. I possess a versatile skill set in a wide array of nail art techniques, including stamping and hand painting, which allows me to create stunning and unique designs. From tasteful embellishments, like glitter and Swarovski crystals, to timeless classics, such as the French manicure and solid colors, I offer an extensive range of options to suit every individual's style.

In addition, I provide dry pedicure services that cater to both gel polish enthusiasts and those who prefer traditional nail lacquer. This comprehensive offering ensures that clients receive a well-rounded and satisfying experience, where attention to detail and quality craftsmanship are always at the forefront.

How would you describe your nail artistry style?

I embrace a diverse and versatile approach to my artistic style, allowing my creativity to flourish across various realms. I find immense joy in both the intricate art of stamping nail art, and the free-flowing expression of hand-painted designs. My artistic preferences extend beyond technique, as I am equally captivated by the vibrant hues of summer, and the rich deep tones characteristic of the autumn season.  Rather than confining myself to a singular style, I wholeheartedly embrace the freedom to explore and create without limitations, resulting in a dynamic and ever-evolving repertoire.

What is your favorite nail design?

Hands down, my absolute favorite nail designs are all about Halloween! Maybe, it's because Halloween happens to be my favorite holiday, and even my birthday, but let me tell you, it's the time when my clients go all out with their nails. We're talking about the spooky season in the salon, starting from September, where my clients make sure they have multiple sets ready for the big day. It's an absolute blast, full of creativity and excitement, as we dive into the enchanting world of Halloween-themed nail art.

Are there any challenges you've had to overcome as a nail artist?

Since obtaining my license, I have encountered numerous challenges, and I anticipate that there will be more on my journey. However, the most significant hurdle I faced stemmed from the fact that I attended cosmetology school, the curriculum primarily focused on hair, granting me a mere two weeks of instruction dedicated to nail enhancements.

I was fortunate enough to have a supportive client base who entrusted me as I honed my skills through dedicated practice and continuous improvement. Nail art, in particular, initially posed a significant challenge for me. Through perseverance and a commitment to learning, I pushed myself to expand my knowledge and refine my abilities. Even after 11 years in this rewarding career, I maintain a humble and inquisitive mindset. I am constantly seeking opportunities for growth and refinement through ongoing learning and practice.

I must admit, I have a tendency to compare myself to others and be overly critical of my own work. This habit has been influenced by the pervasive nature of social media, where appearances and likes can sometimes overshadow true craftsmanship. However, I continually remind myself that the validation from social media metrics does not accurately reflect the quality of my work.

The true measure of my skills lies in the consistent satisfaction and appreciation expressed by my clients, who consistently entrust me with their nail care needs. Their unwavering support and delight in my work serve as a genuine testament to the expertise and dedication I bring to the table. Ultimately, it is the positive impact I have on my clients' experiences that reassures me of the value I bring as a nail technician.

What are some words of advice you can give to future nail artists who want to start a nail company?

Some words of advice to an aspiring independent nail artist are these few things:

1. Embrace continuous learning: Stay curious and committed to expanding your knowledge and skills.  Attend classes to stay up-to-date with the latest trends, techniques, and products in the nail industry.

2. Build a strong foundation: Invest time in comprehensive training and education. A solid understanding of nail anatomy, hygiene practices, and product knowledge will form the basis of your expertise.

3. Develop a unique style: Cultivate your own artistic style and signature techniques. Differentiate yourself from others by offering something distinctive and memorable to your clients.

4. Nurture relationships: Focus on building strong connections with your clients. Provide excellent customer service, listen to their needs, and create a welcoming and comfortable environment. Happy clients will not only become repeat customers but also refer others to your services.

5. Market yourself effectively: Utilize social media platforms and create a professional website to showcase your work and attract potential clients. Engage with your audience, share valuable content, and communicate the benefits of your services.

6. Practice professionalism: Maintain high standards of professionalism in all aspects of your business. Be punctual, organized, and reliable.

7. Seek mentorship and networking opportunities: Connect with experienced professionals in the industry who can guide and inspire you. Attend industry events, join professional associations, and participate in online communities to expand your network.

Outside of your business, what are some other hobbies that you enjoy?

Outside of the salon, you'll often find me cherishing quality time with my family and beloved pets. We find joy in various activities, such as indulging in video games, engaging in creative endeavors, and immersing ourselves in our favorite shows and movies. When it comes to gaming, I have a particular affinity for zombie and horror-themed games. I must confess that the Silent Hill franchise holds a special place in my heart. Exploring the realms of virtual horror provides a thrilling and immersive experience for me.

In addition to gaming, I am also passionate about creating art to adorn our walls at home.  Dirty pours, with their vibrant and unpredictable patterns, captivate me. However, I find immense pleasure in painting landscapes and depicting the graceful beauty of cats on canvas.

As an avid horror enthusiast, my cinematic preferences naturally gravitate towards spine chilling movies and TV shows. Yet, I appreciate the light heartedness of comedies, and recognizing the importance of a good laugh to balance the thrill.

What inspired you to start your journey as a make-up artist?

My journey started from being a hobby. I used to enjoy doing makeup. I decided to push forward by turning it from being a mere hobby to something more.

You are a pro-bridal makeup artist. How has your experience been helping brides to look beautiful for their big day?

I have had both good and bad experiences. Above all, I am glad to be a part of the most beautiful moments of brides’ lives.

How would you describe your makeup artistry style?

I’m all about simplicity, elegance, originality, and enhancing natural beauty.

 

What kind of makeup services do you offer?

I offer bridal makeup, studio walk-ins, photo shoots, home services, and makeup brand influencer services.

Do you prefer a full glam look or a natural makeup look?

I love both! It depends on the occasion and preferences at each point in time.

I am located in Lagos, Nigeria.

Can you tell us more about your makeup training classes? What can people expect when they enroll and attend one of your makeup classes?

My makeup training classes are detailed and in-depth. We have both online and physical classes. We have one-on-one online and offline classes where we teach based on the students area of focus.  Anyone who enrolls for my class should prepare to get the best experience. Also, I can assure anyone that enrolls in my classes, after concluding the class, there would definitely be a positive difference in their makeup game. 

Can you provide our readers with a daily makeup or skincare tip?

Wash/cleanse your face.
Apply a hydrating serum.
Apply a moisturizer no matter the skin type you have. Sometimes people with oily and acne prone skin don’t feel the need to apply a moisturizer, but they actually need it most.
Apply sunscreen.
Apply a lip balm and have a great day! 

Are there any challenges you've had to overcome as a makeup artist?

Yes, I have had many challenges as a makeup artist. By the grace of God, I have been able to overcome it. I am still overcoming it. I’ve had issues with problematic clients, and a few products I had to manage while I was starting up. A major challenge I had was expanding, and I needed a studio to work. I used to work in my apartment in school. As time went on, it wasn’t comfortable anymore. I needed a bigger space. After a while of praying, trusting God, and being patient, I finally got a temporary studio space. If you ask, it’s a big win for me, and a major challenge that God helped me overcome. 

What are some words of advice you can give to future makeup artists who want to create a portfolio and build up their clientele?

My advice to any upcoming makeup artist is to take it one step at a time. Rome was not built in a day. You have to be consistent. Be consistent, be patient, and don’t be in a hurry to be out there. Grow and follow due process. In a matter of time, you’ll see yourself becoming what you’ve always imagined. When building am portfolio or clientele you have to be consistent. Ensure that you’re working. Even when you’re not called for a job, you can book a model, and just do something. Never be idle. It might be stressful, but keep working.

What inspired you to start hand making your cosmetics products?

My inspiration behind hand making my products started with wanting to find organic products for myself and my family. I’d often find myself at the store struggling to find products without harsh chemicals that could have some sort of unfavorable side effect. That’s where it began.  Funny enough, my introduction to it was researching organic ingredients for skincare. It was within that search that I began to learn about organic cosmetics (lipgloss, mascara, lipstick, etc.)

What does your company name "Tagère Cosmetics" represent?

Tagère Cosmetics represents the beauty of catering to your inner Goddess and prioritizing selfcare.  I often say my brand encourages “the good kind of selfish”.

What kind of cosmetic products do you sell?

I sell vegan/cruelty free lip glosses, as well as organic skin care products.

Do you prefer lipstick or lip gloss?

I absolutely prefer lip gloss! 

Have you been able to attend any pop-up shops or events?

Yes, I have. I just attended my very first one on June 29th, 2023.

Can you leave our readers with a makeup or skincare tip that can help them to apply makeup more flawlessly?

It’s no secret that you should always cleanse your face before applying makeup. My personal favorite product to cleanse with is a turmeric soap to encourage a healthy glow that always compliments your makeup.

Are there any challenges you've had to overcome as an entrepreneur?

One of the biggest challenges that I’ve had to overcome as an entrepreneur is the pivotal point I faced in 2021. My business had its own version of a rebirth and it definitely required me to step out of my comfort zone. 

What are some words of advice you can give to future CEOs who want to start a cosmetic company?

If you’re waiting on the “right time” you’ll be waiting forever. We often get wrapped in the idea that a business can’t start until we have the money to do so, the website is launched, and sales are made. It’s an overshadowed fact that time is an investment too! Take time to plan and research.
