Dinah Washington

Queen of the Blues

Queen of the Jukeboxes

Dinah Washington, The Queen of the Blues and The Queen of The Jukeboxes, is celebrating her Centennial! Dinah Washington: A Centennial Celebration to a Life in Music, a photo exhibition organized by Angie Lee Cobbs, will explore the legacy of Dinah. However, her main focus is a biopic that has been in the works for twenty years with the support of Dinah’s family and friends.

Dinah launched the career of Quincy Jones, and inspired singers that include Lady Gaga, Amy Winehouse, and Aretha Franklin, who recorded a tribute album to Dinah in 1964. At this year’s Chicago Blues Festival, Mayor Brandon Johnson lauded Dinah’s achievements and proclaimed June 8, 2024, as Dinah Washington Day. In addition, Mayor Walter Maddox of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Dinah’s birth place, proclaimed August 29, 2024 Dinah Washington Day and named Dinah’s song “What A Difference A Day Makes” the official song of Tuscaloosa. In 1993,Dinah was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame as an “early influence,” and the same year the US Postal Service honored her with a Legend of Rhythm and Blues postage stamp.

What inspired you to start The Rhythm and Blues Preservation Society?

I was inspired to launch the Rhythm and Blues Preservation Society as I wanted to create an organization that honors those who contributed to Black Music Culture. It's not about how many records you sold, or how many awards you've won. If you contributed to the culture of black music, then we will honor you.

Tell us more about the genres of music that are preserved.

Artists in Soul, Blues, Hip Hop, Jazz, Reggae, Latin, and Gospel.
