MENA Voices

What inspired you to start your journey as a writer, producer, and director?

Storytelling has always been a part of who I am. Growing up Pakistani-American, I navigated between cultures and it gave me a lot of stories to tell.

While I am primarily a writer and producer, I took the leap into directing for this short. When I wrote American Fabric, I had such a clear vision for what I wanted it to look and feel like, and I knew the only way to fully realize that vision was to step into the director’s chair myself. It’s been an incredible experience.

How would you describe the genre of film styles that you produce?

Deeply personal, but universally relatable. I’m drawn to stories that explore identity, culture, and the complex choices women face, all told through a lens that blends drama with moments of warmth and humor. The Persian version is a perfect example of that balance, a heartfelt dramedy that resonated with so many audiences at Sundance.

With American Fabric, I leaned into that same style, but with a sharper focus on empowerment and agency. I love telling stories where characters navigate societal expectations while making choices that feel true to themselves.
